Orcas

Orcas

Orcas yesterday, five of them, their fins obsidian knives slashing the waves. Earlier I had gone for a swim in an outdoor pool. The afternoon was cool and overcast, but strangely it was when the clouds were parting, and the sun was allowed through the sky to create those contrasts of gray and gold so typical of Stanley Park, that it started raining on me, a light and magical sprinkle. The afternoon concerned itself with parting the clouds, and allowed for wonderful displays of nimbus continents islanded in sunlight. And in the midst of it all, the geysers of the orcas’ blowholes fountaining in the air, as their cavalry of black banners rose high above the sea, and vanished from my sight.
